Conversant are four, freelance Brighton-based Sign Language Interpreters (BSL/English): Sharon Cox, Marco Nardi, Mark Schofield and Sue MacLaine. Each interpreter has achieved full professional status through academic study, vocational training and assessment.
Individually, each Conversant interpreter has over twenty years professional experience and in coming together is able to offer skills, knowledge and understanding across a diverse range of domains.
A large proportion of our working life has taken place within the South East region, in particular Sussex. This has enabled robust and trusted relationships with the Deaf community and a coherent understanding of regional demands both linguistically and logistically. Our well-informed insight comes from an active approach to national and global issues affecting our profession.
Conversant interpreters have, over the years, regularly come together to facilitate professional development opportunities, and to support and guide each other. A shared integrity and an ethical ethos has evolved; this is made manifest in the respectful and responsive relationship held with all parties within an interpreted interaction. We place high-value on our continuing professional development (CPD) and are pleased to comply with the NRCPD* requirement to evidence this. We also welcome the support that our national membership body, the Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI), gives in facilitating the recording of our CPD activities.
Conversant was formed in 2013, by five founding members: Sharon Cox, Marco Nardi, Mark Schofield, Sue MacLaine and Caroline Adams. The four current members would like to acknowledge and thank Caroline Adams for all of her great work and commitment to both Conversant and the profession of Sign Language Interpreting. In 2019, Caroline decided to pursue a full-time career outside of interpreting; we wish her every success and happiness in following her new passion.

*National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD). Registration demands an interpreter holds PII (Professional Indemnity Insurance), is Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked, evidences their CPD activities and agrees to abide by the Code of Conduct.
